Small Business and the Economy

Where I Stand

Small businesses are the backbone of Maine’s economy and employ nearly 300,000 people across the state. When our small businesses succeed, Maine succeeds. That’s why I remain focused on making sure that federal policies support small businesses and entrepreneurs in our state.

What I’ve Done

  • Helped pass the Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill that is bringing additional jobs to Maine. The bill also provides a historic investment in broadband that will help people connect to quality internet service throughout Maine. This means people can work in a variety of industries will living in urban, suburban, or rural Maine.
  • Led and passed the Paycheck Protection Program Flexibility Act. The law enabled many small businesses in our state to keep people employed and to stay afloat through the steepest downturn since the Great Depression.
  • Led the Corporate Alternative Minimum Tax which ensures Maine small businesses have a more equal footing. Small businesses already must pay tax during any year they make a profit; the nation’s largest businesses should be held to the same standard. Making sure giant competitions pay their fair share helps to level the playing field for Maine businesses that invest in our communities.
  • Negotiated the Tourism Omnibus, which was recently signed into law. Included in the bill was my Visit America Act, legislation that finally makes attracting international tourists — many whom shop at and support Maine’s small businesses — a federal priority.
  • Led and introduced the PREPARE Act, a cost-effective approach to help small businesses access the funding that they need to be proactive and resilient in the face of severe natural disasters.
