York River a Good Candidate for King’s Wild and Scenic Study Bill, National Park Service Says
BANGOR, ME – Today, U.S. Senator Angus King (I-Maine) welcomed a preliminary report released by the National Park Service that found the York River is a good candidate for a Wild and Scenic River Study. Such a study could designate the York River as a Wild and Scenic Partnership River, which could foster federal investments to protect the economic and environmental value of the watershed. Last year, Senator King introduced legislation that would authorize the study.
“The integrity of the York River is economically and environmentally important to the towns and communities that surround it,” said Senator King. “I am hopeful that the Park Service will complete a full study of whether the river should be classified as Wild and Scenic, and I’m pleased that this report brings us one step closer to achieving that goal.”
In September of 2013, Senator King introduced legislation that would authorize a multi-year study of the York River to determine whether it is suitable to be designated as a Wild and Scenic Partnership River. Congresswoman Chellie Pingree (D-ME-01) also introduced the bill in the House of Representatives, and the House passed her bill earlier this year.
