This Week in Washington: King Applauds DOMA Ruling, Introduces Student Loan Fix, and Supports Passage of Immigration Reform

WASHINGTON, D.C. – In an ongoing effort to keep Mainers informed of his work in the nation’s capital, U.S. Senator Angus King (I-ME) took a few minutes to discuss the events of this past week in the United States Senate. In his weekly recap, Senator King addressed:

  • The U.S Supreme Court’s decision to overturn the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), which ensures that all married couples can enjoy equal treatment under federal laws and are extended the same benefits and protections.
  • The introduction of the Bipartisan Student Loan Certainty Act to avert student loan interest rates from doubling on July 1st and provide a permanent solution to lower and fix interest rates for 100 percent of newly issued student loans. Senator King introduced the legislation on Thursday with Senators Alexander, Manchin, Burr, Coburn, and Carper.
  • His support of the historic comprehensive immigration reform bill, which passed the Senate yesterday, and which represents the significant reform of America’s immigration policy in recent history by offering millions of undocumented immigrants an earned pathway to citizenship.
