This Week in Washington: Job Training Bill, Nominations, DISCLOSE Act, BPC Report, Civil Rights Act Anniversary

BATH, ME – As part of his ongoing effort to keep the people of Maine informed of his work in Washington, U.S. Senator Angus King recapped this week’s events in the nation’s capital.

In his weekly address, Senator King discussed:

  • The bipartisan job training legislation that passed in the Senate on Wednesday. The bill, the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act, will reform and streamline the workforce development system by eliminating 15 duplicative programs and providing more discretion to the states.
  • The nominations of Secretary Shaun Donovan and Dr. William “Bro” Adams, which passed out of the Senate Budget Committee and Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, respectively.
  • The introduction of the DISCLOSE Act of 2014, which will help shine light on our broken campaign finance system. Senator King is a cosponsor of the bill.
  • An encouraging report released by the Bipartisan Policy Center that outlines common sense ways Congress can work better together on behalf of the American people. Former Senator Olympia Snowe served as a co-chair of the commission that published the report.
  • The 50th Anniversary of the Civil Rights Act. As part of the commemoration, Congress posthumously awarded the Congressional Gold Medal to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his wife, Coretta Scott King.
