WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Susan Collins, the Ranking Member of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Transportation, and U.S. Senator Angus King today announced that ten Maine airports have been awarded federal grants, totaling more than $5.1 million, from the Federal Aviation Administration to be used for general improvements and safety enhancements.
“Maine's large geographic area makes air travel an important transportation option that connects towns and cities across the state,” said Senators Collins and King in a joint statement. “Maine's small airports play a vital role in supporting local businesses, especially in the state's more rural regions. This funding will help make necessary improvements and maintain a safe operational environment at our airports.”
The awards and recipients are as follows:
- Bethel Regional Airport will receive $750,000 to construct a terminal building, access road, and parking lot.
- The Northern Maine Regional Airport at Presque Isle will receive $216,600 to remove obstructions from the runway approach and to install wind cones that enhance aircraft visual guidance safety.
- The Hancock County-Bar Harbor Airport will receive $2,561,278 to expand the terminal building, which will make it easier for passengers to move through the gate holding area. It will receive an additional $68,553 for pavement markings that enhance aircraft visual guidance.
