Connecting With Mainers
This August, I used my time in Maine to meet with folks across the state to gain a better understanding of how I can best represent their interests in Washington. Here are a few glimpses of what I have been up to.

I was delighted to speak at WEX Inc.'s 30th anniversary celebration with some of Maine's finest leaders. WEX Inc. is a great example of how Maine companies can drive economic development through innovative thinking and a commitment to excellence.
The Mid Coast Hunger Prevention Program introduced its new "Backpack Program" - a project seeking to curb child hunger among our students. As I said at the press conference, something is seriously wrong when we live in the weathliest country in the world, yet our students are too hungry to focus in school. Policy Update
As the Senate went into the August recess, I joined with Senators Ben Cardin (D-MD) and Mike Crapo (R-ID) to introduce the Preventative Healthcare Savings Act of 2013. Our bill would allow Congress to request a cost analysis of preventative healthcare measures extending beyond the existing 10-year window.
As a nation we need to fundamentally rethink how we provide healthcare and this bill would mark the start of an important shift away from the traditional fee-for-service model by promoting the long-term economic benefits of preventative care. It's a winning combination for the American people and our economy.

On a separate note, I was pleased to join several of my colleaues as President Barak Obama signed into the law the Bipartisan Student Loan Certanity Act, a bill I coauthored with Senators Manchin, Carper, Burr, Coburn, Alexander, and Harkin.

On August 28, 1963 I sat in a tree along the National Mall and listened to Dr. Martin Luther King deliver his historic "I Have a Dream" speech. Fifty years later, I had the privilege of honoring that moment from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. Watch my remarks here.
