Sens. Collins, King Announce Nearly $1.5 Million for Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Augusta

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senators Susan Collins and Angus King announced today that the Department of Veterans Affairs is awarding a grant in the amount of $1,483,048 for the expansion and improvement of the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Augusta.

The grant will fund the construction of an administration building, committal service shelter, landscaping, irrigation, and other supporting infrastructure.  The project will develop approximately 1.2 acres.

“Preserving the hallowed grounds where our Veterans are laid to rest is a solemn responsibility,” Senators Collins and King said in a joint statement.  “This funding will support the Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Augusta so that it can continue to serve Maine’s Veterans and their families.”

VA Secretary Eric Shinseki informed the Senators of the grant in a letter received this week.
