Sens. Collins, King Announce Emergency Grant for Affected Great Northern Paper Workers

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senators Susan Collins and Angus King announced today that the U.S. Department of Labor will award a National Emergency Grant in the amount of $284,879 to help serve the workers affected by layoffs at the Great Northern Paper Co. LLC, located in East Millinocket. This federal grant, awarded to the Maine Department of Labor, will provide  additional services to the workers identified for Trade Adjustment Assistance re-employment services that are not available through the TAA program alone.

“As the primary employer in East Millinocket, the layoffs are having serious economic consequences for the community, because the town and surrounding areas are economically dependent on the mill,” Senators Collins and King said in a joint statement.  “This emergency grant will help to provide eligible workers with re-employment services that aim to improve their financial stability.”

The Tri County Workforce Investment Board will manage the provision of services to meet the needs of these dislocated workers.
