WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senators Susan Collins and Angus King today announced that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will award technical assistance to the Lincoln County Town of Damariscotta through its Building Blocks for Sustainable Communities program.

According to EPA, Damariscotta is one of 22 towns and cities nationwide chosen to receive help identifying sustainable strategies for meeting housing needs for different ages and incomes.

“As the Town of Damariscotta plans for its future, this technical assistance will help ensure that it has the tools and resources it needs to grow and meet the housing needs of its citizens while, at the same time, remain a great place to live and work,” Senators Collins and King said in a joint statement.

Building Blocks for Sustainable Communities provides quick, targeted technical assistance to selected communities using a variety of tools that have demonstrated results and widespread application. The purpose of delivering these tools is to stimulate a discussion about growth and development and strengthen local capacity to implement sustainable approaches.

Each technical assistance project in a community will involve a team of EPA-led experts and will include: 

• Public engagement through a one- to two-day workshop.
• Direct consultation with relevant decision-makers.
• A memo outlining specific steps the community could take to implement the ideas generated during the workshop.

Technical assistance is delivered by EPA staff and EPA-hired consultant teams.
