Senators Collins, King Announce More than $5.8 Million for Kennebec Valley Head Start Programs Amid COVID-19

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senators Susan Collins and Angus King announced thatthe U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has awarded KennebecValley Community Action Program a total of $5,869,784 for its Head Start andEarly Head Start Programs. 

“HeadStart provides children with a strong educational foundation that allows themto grow and succeed.  It also gives parents the developmental resourcesthey need to support their children and to help them build confidence,” saidSenators Collins and King in a joint statement.  “We welcome thisinvestment in Kennebec Valley Community Action Program, which will encourageour children to grow and thrive and support Maine’s working families during thecurrent public health and economic crisis.”

HeadStart was established in 1965 to promote school readiness and provide acomprehensive array of health, nutritional, and social services to eligiblefour- and five-year-old preschoolers and their families.  Early Head Startservices are available for eligible children age zero to three and pregnantwomen.  Head Start services include early learning, health, and familywell-being.
