WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senators Susan Collins and Angus King announced two grant awards today from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) for research being conducted at Maine Medical Center and also for the Houlton Band of Maliseet Indians.
The $1,675,425 grant award for Maine Medical Center will support research conducted by Dr. Clifford Rosen, Director of Clinical and Translational Research at Maine Medical Center Research Institute. The supported research is aimed at understanding the function of bone marrow adipose tissue (MAT), which is associated with greater fracture risk and low bone mass. Understanding its function could help identify patients at risk for fractures and other disorders.
“This groundbreaking work being conducted right here in Maine could be crucial to improving the health and wellness of not just Mainers, but people around the world,” said Senator Collins and King in a joint statement.
HHS has also awarded $107,525 to the Houlton Band of Maliseets. This funding will be used to improve health care infrastructure by supporting the implementation of systems to manage accounting, medical records, health boards, and many other important components that ensure health care systems run smoothly.
Senators Collins and King continued, “This investment will support the improvement of services that will enhance the delivery of health care to better meet the needs of those served.”
