Senators Collins, King Announce Grant Funding for Bates College, Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senators Susan Collins and Angus King announced today that the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has awarded grant funding totaling more than $1.5 million for Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems in Brewer, and Bates College in Lewiston.

“Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems is a leader in providing Mainers with high-quality rural care,” said Senators Collins and King in a joint statement. “This funding will help to build upon that success and better serve our rural communities. Likewise, increased funding for the research of Dr. Nancy Koven supports continued innovation and research aimed at improving human health.”

The grant funding has been awarded through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Institute on Aging (NIA), respectively. The CDC and NIA are agencies of the Department of Health and Human Services.

  • $1.35 million will fund research for Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems to improve community health options in rural Maine.
  • Nearly $300,000 has been awarded to Dr. Nancy Koven of Bates College, who is researching the effects of endogenous oxytocin in adult psychosocial adjustment.
