Senators Collins, King Announce $600,000 Grant Award for Aroostook Band of Micmacs

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Susan Collins, the Chairman of the Transportation, Housing, and Urban Development (THUD) Appropriations Subcommittee, and U.S. Senator Angus King announced that the Aroostook Band of Micmacs will receive a $600,000 grant award through the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) Indian Housing Block Grant Program.

“Indian Housing Block Grants offer crucial assistance to tribal communities working to maintain and improve the availability of affordable housing on their lands,” said Senators Collins and King in a joint statement. “This important investment for the Aroostook Band of Micmacs will help support vital projects that provide safe, affordable housing for members of Maine’s northernmost tribe.”

As the Chairman of the THUD Appropriations Subcommittee, Senator Collins works to ensure that the Indian Housing Block Grant Program is adequately funded each year. This competitive assistance program’s primary purpose is the development of viable Native American communities, including decent housing, a suitable living environment, and economic opportunities, principally for persons of low and moderate income.
