WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Susan Collins, Ranking Member of the Senate Transportation Appropriations Subcommittee, and U.S. Senator Angus King today announced that the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) will award $2,560,000 in federal funding to the Casco Bay Island Transit District in Portland. This project, which was selected on a competitive basis, will receive funding through the DOT’s Ferry Boat Discretionary Program. It will be used to help improve the aging ferry terminal along the waterfront and allow continued, reliable ferry service that connects the islands of Casco Bay with the mainland and each other.
“Maine’s ferry services, including Casco Bay Lines, are a critical component of our state’s transportation system and are vital to providing freight and postal service to Mainers, and visitors alike, who live and work in our island communities,” said Senators Collins and King in a joint statement. “This federal funding will assist with the ongoing terminal renovation project in Portland, improving its capacity to accommodate additional passengers, and enhancing safety.”
