Senators Collins, King Announce $1.9 Million for Front Street Renovation in Belfast

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senators Susan Collins and Angus King today announced that the City of Belfast has been awarded a $1,900,000 grant from the Economic Development Administration (EDA), which will support the reconstruction and enhancement of Front Street.  By making improvements to the street and sewer line, the project aims to benefit businesses situated along Front Street, including Front Street Shipyard, which recently completed construction of a new pier.

Last August, Senator Collins visited Front Street Shipyard and toured the area with city officials to learn more about the improvement project and learn firsthand about the opportunity to spur economic growth and create jobs.  In September 2013, Senators Collins and King wrote letters to Willie Taylor, the Regional Director of the EDA, in support of Belfast’s grant application.

“This grant is terrific news for Belfast and the surrounding area,” Senator Collins said. “By leveraging further private investment, this funding will have a positive ripple effect throughout the economy and will lead to the creation of new jobs.”

“I’m thrilled the Economic Development Administration has recognized the hard work and vision of the Belfast community through this well-deserved grant,” said Senator King. “This welcomed investment in infrastructure will not only create jobs, but it will also help support the continued economic growth of the area.”

Belfast anticipates the project will create more than 110 jobs
