Senators Collins and King Congratulate Two Maine Students on Being Named United States Presidential Scholars

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senators Susan Collins and Angus King today congratulated Ursula Hebert Johnson of Waterville and Kyle A. Hietala of West Bath on being named United States Presidential Scholars.

Created in 1964, the United States Presidential Scholars program honors high school seniors for academic excellence, artistic accomplishments, and civic contributions.  More than 3,000 students apply annually to this prestigious scholastic program.  Applicants are subject to a rigorous evaluation process conducted by each Chief State School Officer.

“We congratulate Ursula and Kyle on this tremendous achievement,” Senators Collins and King said in a joint statement.  “Their impressive records demonstrate both excellence in the classroom and a commitment to service.  This honor signifies their hard work and dedication, as well as the important role that exceptional teachers have played in guiding their paths.”

Each Presidential Scholar selects an exceptional educator who has helped them achieve their academic excellence. Ursula Johnson has selected Mr. Scott Rivard of Waterville Senior High School, and Kyle Hietala has selected Mr. Robert Jordan of Morse High School in West Bath.

This year marks the 50th Anniversary of the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program. 121 scholars have been selected to represent each State, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, U.S. families living abroad, and an additional 15 ‘at-large’ scholars.
