Senator King Announces New Healthcare Policy Lead

Jon Heppen joins Senator King’s policy team with Searsport’s Evan Schweikert

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Office of U.S. Senator Angus King (I-Maine) today announced that Jon Heppen has joined Senator King’s team as a Legislative Assistant overseeing healthcare and public health policy. Jon previously led policy work for U.S. Congresswoman Cheri Bustos (D-IL-17) on the House Appropriations Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education Subcommittee. In his new role, Heppen will work to continue Senator King’s efforts to deliver affordable, accessible care for Maine people and Americans nationwide.

“Every Maine person deserves the quality, affordable, and accessible healthcare needed to live a happy, healthy life. There’s a lot of work Congress must to do make this a reality and that work starts with having the hardworking, experienced staff to find commonsense solutions and implement policies,” said Senator King. “Jon Heppen will bring the skills and knowledge necessary to do this critical healthcare policy work. I’m excited to have Jon on my team and look forward to our efforts together to improve healthcare for Maine people, seniors, and every American.”

Jon Heppen, a graduate of Muhlenberg College who holds a Master’s degree in Legislative Affairs from the George Washington University, has nearly a decade of legislative experience on Capitol Hill and in government affairs work. He joins Searsport’s Evan Schweikert, a graduate of Bowdoin College, who serves as health policy legislative aide and has worked for Senator King since 2019.

Senator King is committed to making healthcare more accessible and affordable for Maine people and all Americans. He recently helped pass the Inflation Reduction Act which has laid the groundwork for — and in some cases already implemented — long-term changes in federal policy that will keep people healthier and deliver higher quality care at lower cost to patients. He has also worked to expand telehealth access and ensure rural Maine households have the 21st century connections they need to access online healthcare.
