Maine, NH Senators Applaud PNSY Excellence in Environmental Stewardship

WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Senators Susan Collins (R-ME), Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Kelly Ayotte (R-NH), and Angus King (I-ME) today congratulated workers at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard on being recognized by the Navy for excellence in environmental stewardship. The shipyard received the Fiscal Year 2014 Secretary of the Navy (SECNAV) Environmental Awards in recognition of its Environmental Restoration and Cultural Resources Management programs.  The awards were announced at the annual SECNAV Environmental and Safety Awards ceremony Thursday in Washington, D.C.

"Portsmouth Naval Shipyard’s skilled and dedicated workforce is second to none, and this recognition is a testament to the shipyard’s continued commitment to conservation of our natural resources," said the Senators in a joint statement. "For the fourth year in a row, workers at PNSY have proven their dedication to environmental management. We applaud their outstanding progress on the environmental restoration and clean-up program and their dedication to preserving the yard’s cultural resources.”

The SECNAV Environmental Awards programs recognize Navy and Marine Corps individuals, teams, ships, and installations for exceptional environmental stewardship.  Candidates are judged on five key criteria, including program management, orientation to mission, stakeholder interaction, transferability, and technical merit.

Portsmouth Naval Shipyard will now move on to compete in the Secretary of Defense Environmental Awards competition.

This is the fourth consecutive year PNSY has been recognized for its environmental programs. The shipyard previously won fiscal year 2011 SECNAV award for Environmental Restoration, fiscal year 2012 Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) award for Environmental Restoration, and fiscal year 2013 CNO award for Sustainability.
