WASHINGTON, D.C. –U.S. Senator Angus S. King, Jr. (I-Maine) today video conferenced via Google Hangout with students and faculty from Lawrence High School in Fairfield, kicking-off the Senator’s effort to connect with every high school in the State of Maine over his next six years in office. The 40 minute discussion, called “Capitol Class with Angus” and moderated by senior Matt Saunders, addressed a variety of issues including the economy, the national debt, and education. Senator King answered the student-created questions and spoke to the importance of raising aspirations. He also applauded the school’s dedicated staff and commended the student body on their civic interest and engagement.
“I had a fantastic time speaking with the students and faculty at Lawrence High School and thank them for taking the time out of their busy day to talk to me,” Senator King said following the call. “Technology is a powerful tool that allows us to connect with one another and have meaningful and important discussions about issues that are critical to Maine and the nation. I applaud the students for their perceptive questions and for their desire to make our state and country a better place for all of us.”
Principle Pamela Swett added, “We are extremely honored to be the first school chosen in Senator King’s campaign to connect with students. Our students submitted insightful questions for the Senator and we appreciate him taking the time to answer them.”
Lawrence High School, which is part of Maine School Administrative District 49, serves approximately 700 students from the towns of Albion, Clinton, Benton, and Fairfield. Senator King’s effort to digitally connect with high schools across the state is part of a larger, technologically innovative constituent outreach program involving additional Google Hangouts, Skype calls with constituents and organizations in Maine, and weekly videos recapping events in the U.S. Senate.
