King Tours Maine Small Business that Produces Eggs for White House Tradition

BUCKFIELD, ME – Today, U.S. Senator Angus King (I-Maine) toured Wells Wood Turning & Finishing, Inc. in Buckfield, which is currently in the process of manufacturing the last batch of collectable Easter eggs to be used in this year’s White House Easter Egg Roll. The “Blue Robin’s Egg” batch will be part the larger 85,000 multicolored eggs ordered from the company for the White House’s annual event.

“Wells Wood Turning and Finishing is an excellent example of how creativity and skilled Maine craftsmanship are coming together to make a mark across the country, including in our nation’s capital at the White House’s time-honored Easter egg roll,” Senator King said. “I’m proud that Maine has such outstanding small businesses that are committed to making high-quality products and providing good jobs here at home. I will continue to work hard in the Senate to create an economic environment that allows them to grow and prosper.”

Wells Wood Turning and Finishing , Inc. employs about thirty people and manufacturers a wide variety of high-quality wood products – including various handles, drawer knobs, and table legs, among many other custom products – from a renewable and sustainable wood resource. As part of its specialized product line, the company has made the official White House Easter egg for the past six years.

The 2014 souvenir eggs come in four colors – pink, orange, blue, green – and include the stamped signatures of the President and First Lady. A commemorative purple “Bo and Sunny” egg is included only in the 2014 5-pack Collector’s Egg Set.

The White House will host the 136th White House Easter Egg Roll on Monday, April 21st, 2014. According to the White House, the eggs first became part of the annual tradition in 1981, when President and Mrs. Ronald Reagan hosted a hunt for wooden eggs that bore the signatures of actors, actresses, famous politicians, and athletes.
