WASHINGTON, D.C. -- U.S. Senator Angus S. King, Jr. (I-Maine) released the following statement after the Senate failed to reach a resolution on sequestration:

“I’m disappointed that Congress was unable to move forward on a sequester replacement plan. Sequestration represents a significant threat to our economic and national security and we lost an opportunity today to work together to achieve a much needed resolution.

“I am encouraged, however, by tomorrow’s scheduled meeting between President Obama and Congressional leadership and hope they can come to a reasonable resolution, although to do so, there must be give on both sides. While at it, they should move the discussion beyond sequestration to the broader issue of long-term deficit reduction. It would be a real relief to the American people – and a boost to our economy – if we could get beyond the ongoing fiscal crisis, get our budget on firm financial footing, and move on.”
