King Statement on Search for Missing El Faro Crew Members

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Angus King‎ (I-Maine) today released the following statement on the ongoing search for the missing crew members of the cargo ship El Faro, four of whom are reportedly from Maine:

“My heart goes out to the crew members of the El Faro and their families and loved ones during this difficult time,” Senator King said. “My office has been in touch with the U.S. Coast Guard for additional information and will continue to remain in contact with them as the search continues. Like everyone in Maine, I continue to hold out hope that the crew members may be safely brought home.”

The U.S. Coast Guard announced this morning that it believes the 790-foot cargo ship sank as a result of encountering Hurricane Joaquin on its way from Jacksonville, Florida to San Juan, Puerto Rico. According to reports, four members of the 33 person crew are from Maine.

Senator King’s office has been in contact with the U.S. Coast Guard to seek more information.
