King Statement on National POW/MIA Recognition Day

PORTLAND, ME – Today, U.S. Senator Angus King (I-Maine) released the following statement in observance of National POW/MIA Recognition Day. This day recognizes and shows solidarity with America’s servicemembers who have been Prisoners of War, those still Missing in Action, and their families:

“I am honored to join communities across Maine and the nation who are gathered in gratitude to those brave servicemembers who have been Prisoners of War, and for those who remain Missing in Action today. This solemn occasion provides us an opportunity to remind the families who endure the quiet, painful sacrifice of a missing loved one that we stand with them in solidarity. May this day also inspire us to renew our resolve to bring those still Missing in Action home to their loved ones – and to reaffirm our unwavering commitment to care for those who have returned.

“These brave men and women, along with their families, deserve our deepest appreciation. It is through their service that we enjoy the liberties we hold so dear. We are eternally indebted to their sacrifices, both past and present, and must always remember to take the time to listen to their powerful stories of service. I know that I echo the thoughts and prayers of people in Maine and all across the country when I say, “You are not forgotten.”

“Together, it is our duty to ring truth to these words. This solemn phrase, found on each flag, is a reminder of our commitment to leave no one behind and our obligation to recognize these heroes – both in word and deed. The greatest tribute we can pay to these cherished loved ones is to continue our unyielding efforts to bring home those who are still missing. And for those who have returned to our communities, we must honor their selflessness by making sure they receive the support and timely, compassionate care they deserve.

“On this Prisoners of War and Missing in Action Day, I am humbled to recognize those who have sacrificed so much to protect our way of life. To those families, who have stood with their sons and daughters through great hardships, know that we stand with you.”
