King Statement on Iran Nuclear Agreement

BRUNSWICK, ME – U.S. Senator Angus King (I-Maine), a member of the Senate Intelligence and Armed Services Committees, released the following statement on today’s announcement that the P5+1 nations have reached a political framework agreement with Iran:

“A nuclear-armed Iran is a dangerous proposition not only to the United States, but also to the rest of the world – and diplomacy is, as it always has been, the best way for the U.S. and its allies to mitigate that threat. The framework announced today is an important step forward in reaching a final deal between Iran and our P5+1 partners,” Senator King said. “While I am encouraged by the progress, I look forward to closely reviewing the details. This is not a deal based on trust, but one based on enforcement and verification, which are going to be at the heart of its long-term success. Congress has a vital role to play in exercising oversight, but it’s one that must be done soberly and responsibly and based entirely on the merits of the deal – not on the politics of the day. This matter is far too important to fall victim to politics and partisanship.”
