WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Angus King (I-ME) released the following statement today after an accord was reached concerning the use of filibusters:
“I’m pleased the Senate has reached an agreement that averts the ‘nuclear option’ and that moves the President’s nominees closer to a confirmation vote without setting-off the disruption that a majority-only rules change would have entailed. The agreement is a positive step forward for the country and for the institution, and it was forged as a direct result of last night’s meeting in the Old Senate Chamber where Senators on both sides of the aisle expressed a sincere desire to make this body work again. This type of open and candid dialogue is how the Senate should function.
“The fact remains that our constituents are disappointed in the bitter partisanship that too-often prevents us from addressing many of the serious issues facing the nation. They elected us to do the work of the nation, and this agreement is a stepping stone to achieving that result, as we have already seen with the long-delayed vote today to confirm Richard Cordray as the Director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.”
