PORTLAND, ME – U.S. Senator Angus King (I-Maine), a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, released the following statement today in response to the President’s nomination of Ashton Carter to replace Chuck Hagel as U.S. Secretary of Defense:
“I applaud the President for moving quickly to fill this crucial position, particularly at such an important time when bold leadership from the United States is necessary to help confront many of the growing threats across the globe,” Senator King said. “During my time in office, I have both met and worked with Ash Carter, and I am impressed with his experience, intellect, and capability. I also know he is well-respected by the military, by his colleagues inside and outside of the Pentagon, and by Members of Congress. I look forward to meeting with him again soon and hearing his testimony during his confirmation hearing before the Armed Services Committee about how he proposes to lead the Department of Defense.”
Ashton Carter served as the Deputy Secretary of Defense from 2011 to 2013, and Undersecretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology and Logistics from 2009-2011.
