King Statement on Debt Ceiling Vote

King joins with 62 other Senators to pass the bipartisan Fiscal Responsibility Act of 2023 to protect the full faith and credit of America’s economy

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Angus King released the following statement after voting with a bipartisan group of 62 other Senators to pass the Fiscal Responsibility Act of 2023 that will raise the federal government’s debt ceiling until January 1, 2025. The bill now goes to President Joe Biden’s desk for his signature into law.

“Maine people pay their bills when they are due – the federal government should be no different. Today, I joined with Senators on both sides of the aisle to pass the Fiscal Responsibility Act of 2023 and ensure the United States continues to pay the bills it owes. There are some compromises in the bill that I wish weren't necessary, but that is inevitable in a divided government. The most important part of the agreement we passed today is that it averts a catastrophic default that would raise prices, cost countless jobs, and devastate the global economy. I appreciate that Speaker McCarthy, President Biden, and my colleagues negotiated this bill in good faith.”
