WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Angus King (I-Maine) released the following statement today after voting to advance the Protect Women’s Health from Corporate Interference Act. The legislation, which was drafted in response to the Supreme Court’s Hobby Lobby decision, would ensure that employers cannot deny certain required health benefits to their workers or other medical procedures, like vaccines and blood transfusions, when an employer has a religious objection.

“I have never seen a corporation sitting in a pew at St. Paul’s Church in Brunswick. And I’m very concerned that with the Hobby Lobby decision the Supreme Court has created a precedent that blurs the lines between what is a covered health benefit and what isn’t when it comes to religious exemptions,” Senator King said. “This isn’t the 1950s. A woman should never have to worry about whether or not she can access certain healthcare services based on what her boss believes.”
