WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Angus King (I-Maine) released the following statement after the Senate Foreign Relations Committee today approved legislation that would establish a legislative framework for Congress to consider any final nuclear agreement reached by the United States, its P5+1 partners, and Iran:
“This bill lays out a sensible and orderly process that will allow Congress to weigh in on any potential deal in a responsible manner,” Senator King said. “This discussion has no room for partisanship. Diplomacy deserves every chance to succeed, and with this bill, I am encouraged that Congress can play a productive role in that process. When our nation is able to speak with one voice, the deal will be stronger for it.”
The Senate Foreign Relations Committee today unanimously approved S. 615, the Iran Nuclear Agreement Review Act of 2015, which would require any final agreement with Iran be submitted to Congress for a 30-day review period before congressionally-mandated sanctions on Iran could be waived or suspended by the president. Senator King, a member of the Senate Armed Services and Intelligence, is an original cosponsor of the bill, which now heads to the Senate floor for consideration.
