King Statement on 4th of July

BRUNSWICK, ME – Today, U.S. Senator Angus King (I-Maine) released the following statement in honor of the 4th of July:

“This 4th of July may not have the big backyard barbeques we’re used to, but it can still be a moment for rest, respite, and reflection on both the founding values that both launched America into independence and the national ideals that have kept us strong. We are a nation borne from self-evident truths that all people have a right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness; we are a nation that has remained strong, despite massive challenges, by remaining united and continuing to look out for one another during the darkest of days.  Exactly in times like these, it’s important to return to our national motto: E Pluribus Unum – from many, one.  The concept is as important as it is simple; we are a vast, diverse, vibrant people, and we all are proud to be Americans.

“We are not perfect, but we can and must improve – indeed, our founders built America as an idea that only works if each generation continues to strive for a more perfect union. So, as we mark this important national holiday, we can all take the opportunity to reflect upon our role to play in living up to that responsibility in this moment of crisis. To all Maine people: enjoy the day, but please, be smart, be safe, and wear a mask – because this virus does not observe the holiday. It’s an easy way to make sure we’re taking the necessary steps to take care of each other, in the spirit of American unity.”
