WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Angus King (I-Maine), a member of the Senate Armed Services and Intelligence Committees, released the following statement after the Senate passed the Iran Nuclear Agreement Review Act of 2015:
“Today’s strong bipartisan vote is a major victory for thoughtful and responsible governing and a rare triumph of policy over partisanship,” Senator King said. “By passing a bill that provides Congress with a productive and sensible say in the process, we are giving diplomacy the chance it deserves to succeed as our country and our P5+1 partners negotiate for an enforceable and verifiable agreement to block Iran’s path to a nuclear weapon.”
The Iran Nuclear Agreement Review Act of 2015, of which Senator King is an original cosponsor, would require any final agreement with Iran be submitted to Congress for a 30-day review period before congressionally-mandated sanctions on Iran could be waived or suspended by the president.
Senator King has long called for Congress to have a responsible role in reviewing any nuclear agreement with Iran and has consistently urged colleagues to put partisanship aside in tackling this critical geopolitical matter.
