WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Angus King and Representatives Chellie Pingree and Jared Golden today welcomed the Biden administration’s appointment of Sherry Hamel as the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Maine Farm Service Agency (FSA) Executive Director. In this position, Hamel will guide federal farm policy and oversee agricultural operations in the state. Earlier this year, the Members sent a letter to USDA Secretary Vilsack recommending Hamel for the appointment.
“Maine’s farming industry has been at the heart of our communities for generations, creating good paying jobs and putting food on the tables of families across our state. Our farmers deserve leaders who understand the evolving, everyday challenges they face, are committed to helping deliver the resources they need, and work with the same determination that they display each and every day. Sherry Hamel is clearly that type of leader, and we welcome her appointment to serve as Executive Director of the Maine Farm Service Agency,” said Senator King and Representatives Pingree and Golden. “Sherry’s proven track record of success at the USDA, her understanding of our heritage industries, and long history of advocating for Maine farmers makes her a perfect choice for the role. We look forward to her continued work at the helm of this important agency and the successful partnership she will have with Maine’s farming industry."
Before her appointment, Sherry Hamel was serving as the Acting Maine Farm Service Agency Executive Director, and has been an Executive Officer for the state agency since 2016. In her 27-year career with the USDA, she’s served in multiple roles, including as a farm loan specialist. She is a graduate of the University of Maine.
Farm Service Agency (FSA) State Executive Directors oversee USDA operations and agricultural policy implementation in every state. Each State Executive Director works with the State Committee to administer FSA programs and County office operations, develops and maintains stakeholder relationships with customers and other agencies and governments. They work to assist farmers seeking loans and other financial assistance, providing support for operating costs, emergencies, and other financial needs.
