PORTLAND, ME – U.S. Senator Angus S. King, Jr. (I-Maine) announced today that he will be serving on the following Armed Services Subcommittees for the 113th Congress: the Subcommittee on Seapower, the Subcommittee on Strategic Forces, and the Subcommittee on Personnel. Senator King’s appointments place him in a powerful position to represent Maine’s defense-related interests, especially when it comes to issues like shipbuilding at Bath Iron Works, maintenance and repair activities at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, military bases, and compensation and benefits for Maine’s military men and women.

“I’m pleased to have been named to these three important subcommittees because it’s vital that Maine be given a voice in their critical work,” said Senator King. “My positions will allow me to advocate for Mainers who serve in the armed forces and for Maine’s best interests, particularly when it comes to our state’s defense industry, which not only contributes greatly to our national security, but which also provides a job for many hard-working Mainers. I look forward to undertaking that work and seeing that Maine is well represented.”

Specific information on the subcommittees is as follows:

Subcommittee on Seapower: This subcommittee exercises jurisdiction over maritime interests, including the budgets for U.S. Navy and Marine Corps procurement contracts, research, development, test, and evaluation funds, Army and Air Force strategic lift programs, and the National Defense Sealift Fund.

Subcommittee on Strategic Forces: This subcommittee exercises jurisdiction over the budgets for nuclear and strategic forces, intelligence programs, space programs, cyber space programs, Department of Energy defense nuclear and environmental programs, and ballistic missile defense.

Subcommittee on Personnel: This subcommittee exercises jurisdiction over military and Department of Defense civilian personnel policies, military personnel compensation and benefits, military health care, and military nominations.
