King Mourns Passing of Former U.S. Senator William Hathaway

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Angus King (I-ME) released the following statement this evening on the passing of former U.S. Senator William “Bill” Hathaway:

“I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Senator Bill Hathaway, a dear friend, cherished mentor, and dedicated public servant for his beloved State of Maine. As a young man, I had the great privilege of serving as an aide to then-Senator Hathaway, a position in which I was fortunate to witness firsthand his strong moral courage and his sincere and unfailing desire to help others. Indeed, I will always be grateful for the opportunity to work for Bill, and I will always treasure the sage wisdom and advice he provided to me throughout the years, both as Governor and as Senator. His example is one that continues to inspire me each and every day, and his legacy of service and contributions to Maine will resonate within the state for generations to come. My thoughts and prayers are with Bill’s family during this difficult time.”

From 1972 to 1974, Senator King served as Chief Counsel to the U.S. Senate Subcommittee on Alcoholism and Narcotics under Senator Hathaway.
