BRUNSWICK, ME – This morning, U.S. Senator Angus King (I-Maine) participated in the groundbreaking for the future home of The Gathering Place, a Brunswick-based organization that works to support both individuals experiencing homeless and other vulnerable members of the local community. The Gathering Place’s new facility, which is expected to be completed by mid-summer, is located on Union Street in Brunswick and is strategically located to share a campus with the Mid Coast Hunger Prevention Program and a local clothing bank.
“Over the last six years, The Gathering Place has grown from a wonderful idea into a meaningful support system that is improving lives in the Midcoast on a daily basis,” said Senator King. “With this new facility, the organization will be able to continue to expand its positive impact while working with their new neighbors, such as the Mid Coast Hunger Prevention Program and the clothing bank, to strengthen the surrounding community. I’m honored to join the celebration today, and am confident that The Gathering Place will build on its already significant efforts to support some of the area’s more vulnerable citizens.”
The Gathering Place was founded in 2010 to support some of the Brunswick area’s most vulnerable citizens with daytime services. On a typical day, the volunteer organization welcomes between 50 and 70 guests. The organization has received approximately 60,000 visits since it was created.
Later today, Senator King will also will attend the dedication of the new Sam L. Cohen Center, a day center in Biddeford for people with dementia that was previously known as the Truslow Center.
