King Hails $20 Million National Science Foundation Grant for University of Maine

GEORGETOWN, ME – U.S. Senator Angus King (I-Maine) today announced that the University of Maine will receive a $20 million award from the National Science Foundation (NSF) through the NSF’s Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR). The funding will be used to help create the Sustainable Ecological Aquaculture Network (SEANET), which will analyze and explore the impacts of coastal resources.

“I am thrilled that the University of Maine will receive this substantial award,” said Senator King. “Coastal communities in Maine and around the world face mounting challenges from global climate change and its economic ramifications. It is absolutely critical that we develop networks such as SEANET to leverage our costal resources, harness information from our researchers on the front lines, and protect our coastal economy for generations to come.”

This five-year Research Infrastructure Improvement (RII) Track-1 award is a multi-institution, public-private partnership. Maine is one of six jurisdictions to receive this award.
