WASHINGTON, D.C. –U.S. Senator Angus S. King, Jr. (I-Maine), a member of the Senate Rules Committee, cosponsored legislation this week that improves accountability, increases transparency, and saves taxpayer money by modernizing campaign finance reporting practices.
The Senate Campaign Disclosure Parity Act, introduced by Senator Jon Tester (D-Montana), requires candidates for the United States Senate to file their quarterly campaign finance reports electronically with the Federal Election Commission. Candidates currently only have to file paper reports with the Secretary of the Senate, which creates delays that prevent the documents from being publicly available online for months. Additionally, the legislation would save taxpayers nearly a half million each year by increasing government efficiency and reducing waste.
“Congressional campaigns are only becoming more expensive while the transparency of their funding remains murky at best,” said Senator King. “The result is a regrettable amount of money influencing our elections with voters still asking where it all came from. This common-sense measure will not only ensure candidate accountability and increase transparency for voters, but it will do so in a timely manner while saving taxpayer money.”
