King Continues Call to Limit Money in Politics

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Angus King (I-Maine) welcomed an announcement from Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) on the Senate Floor this morning that the Senate Judiciary Committee will soon hold a hearing on a proposed Constitutional amendment to limit political funding of campaigns:

“I welcome the Majority Leader’s announcement today and hope we move quickly to vote on the amendment. The enormous tidal wave of money in politics must not drown out the voices of ordinary Americans,” Senator King said.

Senator King is a cosponsor of Senator Tom Udall’s (D-N.M.) proposed Constitutional amendment to regulate and limit the raising and spending of money for federal political campaigns.

On April 30th, King chaired a Senate Rules Committee Hearing to examine the influence of dark money on U.S. elections and underscored the urgency of expanding disclosure requirements for campaign contributions in the wake of the Supreme Court decision McCutcheon v. Federal Election Commission. For more information on the hearing, click HERE. King has also introduced the Real Time Transparency Act, which would require that all campaign contributions of $1000 or more be filed with the FEC within 48-hours.
