King Congratulates MaineWork’s Margo Walsh on National Entrepreneurial Award

Walsh to be recognized at Department of Commerce this evening

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Angus King (I-Maine) today met with Margo Walsh, founder of the Portland-based industrial staffing company MaineWorks, to congratulate her on being one of only ten entrepreneurs nationally to win a 2015 SCORE Award. Walsh will attend a ceremony at the Department of Commerce in Washington this evening honoring her and the nine other winners.

“Margo Walsh exemplifies the entrepreneurial spirit and commitment to collaboration that will drive our economy and our state forward,” said Senator King. “We need innovators who have the boldness to try new things and the compassion to help those in need get back on their feet, and that is what’s happening at MaineWorks today. By giving some of our state’s most vulnerable a chance to work hard and succeed, Margo and her team are making a brighter future for Maine.”

The SCORE awards recognize American business owners and non-profits whose success has been impacted by the SCORE program.  SCORE is a nonprofit association supported by the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) that is dedicated to helping small businesses get off the ground, grow, and achieve their goals through education and mentorship. The organization had a network of more the 11,000 volunteers, and has been around for more than 50 years.

MaineWorks is an industrial staffing company that supplies temporary labor specializing in the field of construction. The company seeks to dignify the experience of temporary employment for workers from vulnerable backgrounds. Most of the company’s employees are in recovery from substance abuse, and many come from low socioeconomic background and have previous non-violent felony convictions.

Walsh will be awarded the Outstanding Job-Creator Award at tonight’s ceremony. MaineWorks was recognized by SCORE in 2014 as the program’s most successful innovative business in Maine.
