WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Angus S. King, Jr. (I-Maine) congratulated Jackson Beck of South Portland and Thomas Poblador of Berwick on being selected as Maine’s delegates to the 51st Annual United States Senate Youth Program (USSYP) in Washington, D.C. Jackson and Thomas will join 102 other students from across the nation in spending a week in the nation’s Capital to observe the federal government in action.
“I’m pleased to congratulate Jackson and Thomas on being selected as this year’s Maine delegates to the United States Senate Youth Program,” said Senator King. “This distinction is a testament to their character and a reflection of their commitment to public service and the betterment of our state and nation. I wholeheartedly look forward to meeting with them in Washington.”
BACKGROUND: The USSYP, founded in 1962, is fully funded by the William Randolph Hearst Foundation – no government funds are utilized. The students will visit Capitol Hill, the White House, the Pentagon, the State Department, the Supreme Court, and other institutions in Washington, D.C. They will also meet with Senators, cabinet officials, and other government leaders. Mr. Beck and Mr. Poblador and each of the student delegates chosen to participate will also receive a $5,000 college scholarship.
