PORTLAND, ME – Today, on the 73rd anniversary of the attack at Pearl Harbor, U.S. Senator Angus King (I-Maine) joined with AMVETS Department of Maine at Fort Allen Park on Portland’s Eastern Promenade to remember the more than 2,400 American service-members and civilians who lost their lives as well as those who survived.
“Today, we pause to remember and reflect on the service and sacrifice of the more than 2,400 souls who perished on that fateful day 73 years ago,” said Senator King. “We join with their families in mourning their loss and celebrating their lives, and we pay tribute to those who survived that defining moment in American history and who went forward to fight for and preserve the freedom that we cherish today. Through this recognition, let us recommit ourselves to the ideals for which they so nobly fought and let us stand beside them and every man and woman who wears the uniform in service to our nation.”
Also attending the ceremony was Jim Watson of South Portland, a Navy veteran and Pearl Harbor survivor. Watson was on USS Phoenix when Japanese planes attacked the U.S. Pacific Fleet on December 7th, 1941.
AMVETS Department of Maine have organized the annual Pearl Harbor Day remembrance service in Portland for 47 years.
