King Appointed to Three Energy and Natural Resource Subcommittees

Will serve on Energy, National Parks, and Water and Power Subcommittees

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Angus King (I-Maine), a member of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, announced today that he has been appointed to serve on the following subcommittees for the 114th Congress: Energy; National Parks; and Water and Power. Senator King was appointed to serve on the Energy and Natural Resources Committee earlier this year.

“As a new member of the Energy and Natural Resources Committee, I will play an active role in shaping our national energy policies, and with these assignments, I will have the chance to give Maine a voice in these important discussions,” said Senator King. “I look forward to the opportunity to craft policies aimed at reducing energy costs for Maine people, protecting Maine’s natural resources, and preserving a bright future for generations to come.” 

The Subcommittee on Energy exercises jurisdiction over nuclear, coal, and synthetic fuels research and development; nuclear and non-nuclear energy commercialization projects; nuclear fuel cycle policy; Department of Energy National Laboratories; global climate change; new technologies research and development; nuclear facilities siting and insurance program; commercialization of new technologies including, solar energy systems; Federal energy conservation programs; energy information; liquefied natural gas projects; oil and natural gas regulation; refinery policy; coal conversion; utility policy; strategic petroleum reserves; regulation of Trans-Alaska Pipeline System and other oil and gas pipeline transportation systems within Alaska Arctic research and energy development; and oil, gas, and coal production and distribution.

The Subcommittee on National Parks exercises jurisdiction over the National Park System; Wild and Scenic Rivers System; National Trails System; national recreation areas; national monuments; historic sites; military parks and battlefields; Land and Water Conservation Fund; historic preservation; outdoor recreation resources; and preservation of prehistoric ruins and objects of interest on the public domain.

The Subcommittee on Water and Power exercises jurisdiction over irrigation; reclamation projects, including related flood control purposes; power marketing administrations; energy development impacts on water resources; groundwater resources and management; hydroelectric power; low head hydro; and energy related aspects of deepwater ports.
