WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Angus King (I-Maine) released the following statement today in response to an announcement by Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Rep. Jeff Miller (R-Fla.), the co-chairmen of the Senate and House Veterans’ Affairs Conference Committee, that they have reached a compromise on legislation that would reform the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and give it the necessary tools to provide quality, timely health care to veterans:
“To put it simply: this is how Congress should work. Members of the Senate and House recognized the problem, debated and negotiated proposals, and ultimately, compromised on a solution that, I believe, is worthy of the veterans it will serve,” Senator King said. “This compromise bill will usher in a wave of much-needed accountability and reform at the VA, including increased funding for more doctors and new health care facilities, greater flexibility to access care through the ARCH program and non-VA providers, and improvements to critical scheduling technology – all of which will make a substantial difference in delivering better and faster care to our veterans. It’s time for a new day at the VA, and I think this is the bill to help get us there.”
