King Announces Maine Priest as His Guest for Pope Francis’s Address to Congress

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Angus King (I-Maine) today announced that the Reverend Mike Seavey, pastor and administrator of the Portland Peninsula and Island Parishes, will be his guest at Pope Francis’s address to a joint meeting of Congress next Thursday, September 24th. As Senator King’s guest, Father Seavey will sit in the gallery of the House of Representatives during the Pope’s historic address.

“I have known Father Seavey for more than 40 years and have always admired his steadfast faith, his humility, and his dedication to service. He is a remarkable man who has done so much to improve the lives and lift the spirits of Maine people while strengthening the bonds that tie our communities together," said Senator King. “I am thrilled that he will join me for the Pope's address to Congress next week.”

“It is truly humbling to have this opportunity to witness Pope Francis’s address,” said Father Seavey. “It will be an honor and tremendous opportunity to hear the Pope’s message firsthand and bring it back to share with Maine’s Catholic community. All of us, including members of Congress, can learn a lot from what Pope Francis has to say.”

Additionally, each Congressional office has been given a limited number of free tickets to watch a telecast of the Pope’s address outside on the West Front Lawn of the Capitol. Senator King’s office is making these tickets available to Mainers on a first-come, first-serve basis. Please note that Mainers must provide their own transportation and accommodations and that the tickets are standing-room only. Anyone interested is encouraged to call Senator King’s office at 202-224-5344 for more information.
