BRUNSWICK, ME – Today, U.S. Senator Angus King (I-Maine) released the December edition of his Inside Maine podcast. This month’s podcast features Maryalice Crofton, executive director of the Maine Commission for Community Service (MCCS) and Rick Dorian, executive director of the Maine Children’s Home for Little Wanderers in Waterville. Maryalice and Rick joined Senator King to discuss volunteerism in Maine and community service around the holiday season.
“It doesn’t come as a surprise to me that Maine has one of the highest volunteer percentages in the nation – not just around the holiday season but throughout the year,” said Senator King. “Maine people just get it: whether it’s volunteering time at a local food pantry or helping to assemble gift boxes for children to open on Christmas Day, we can all do something to make someone’s day a little brighter.”
During his time in the Senate, Senator King has sought to elevate the voices and support the efforts of Maine people who volunteer their time. In October, he addressed attendees at the Blaine House Conference on Service and Volunteers at the University of Maine, an event sponsored by MCCS. Executive director Maryalice Crofton has been supporting Maine volunteers for decades, she joined MCCS in 1995 and previously served at the executive director of two Maine ‘Big Brothers Big Sisters’ agencies. At the Commission, Maryalice serves as liaison to external partners, strategic planning, program development, external communications, intergovernmental relations, and represents MCCS on regional and national initiatives.
Senator King also welcomed Rick Dorian to discuss the Maine Children’s Home Christmas Program, which reaches more than 1,800 financially disadvantaged children across Maine. In addition to the Christmas Program, the Maine Children’s Home has five other programs: an early education center, a comprehensive adoption agency, a counseling center, a summer camp scholarship program and an education program specifically for pregnant or parenting teens.
The “Inside Maine Podcast with Senator Angus King” is a 30-minute program that aims to help keep Maine people informed about issues of the day, how they affect life in the state, and how they factor into Senator King’s work as one of two independents in the U.S. Senate. Senator King’s podcast builds on his existing radio show that airs on Newsradio WGAN in Portland, Maine between 10 and 11 a.m. on almost every last Saturday of the month.
