WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. Senate last night unanimously passed a resolution authored by Senators Susan Collins and Angus King that designates August 7th, 2013 as “National Lighthouse and Lighthouse Preservation Day”.
Senators Collins and King introduced the resolution in advance of August 7th, which will mark the 224th anniversary of President George Washington’s signing of the Lighthouse Act of 1789. The legislation established the federal government’s role in supporting lighthouses, beacons, buoys, and public piers.
“Lighthouses have for centuries stood tall and strong as symbols of safety and security upon Maine’s rocky coasts, faithfully guiding seafarers to our shores,” Senators Collins and King said in a joint statement. “It’s important for us not only to recognize the tremendous role that they play in our maritime commerce, but to also preserve the legacy and history that they embody. We’re immensely pleased the United States Senate joined us in that endeavor by declaring August 7th of this year as National Lighthouse and Lighthouse Preservation Day.”
