Collins, King Congratulate Thornton Academy for Winning Department of Commerce Award

E Award recognizes school’s commitment to international education

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senators Susan Collins and Angus King congratulated Thornton Academy of Saco for being recognized by the Department of Commerce for its long-standing efforts to promote international education and economic and cultural development by drawing students from around the world.

“In today’s complex world, connecting with new people and new ideas has never been more important,” Senators Collins and King said. “Thornton Academy, with its emphasis on international education, is a great example of how cultural exchanges can help bridge divides, foster greater understanding, and create a more welcoming world. We commend Thornton on this well-deserved award, and thank the school for its meaningful contributions both in our state of Maine and the international community.”

At a ceremony in Washington today, Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker presented the Department of Commerce’s E Award to Thornton Headmaster Rene Menard. The E Award is the highest recognition any U.S. entity can receive for making a significant contribution to the expansion of U.S. exports. Established by executive order by President Kennedy, the E Award is a symbol of excellence to honor and provide recognition to America's exporters. Thornton Academy, a leader in international education, is the first Maine organization to win an E Award since 1983.

This year, Thornton Academy enrolled 155 international students from more than 20 countries. The school launched its residential program in 2008, and the majority of its international students live in on-campus dormitories or in homestays with local families. The growth in programming has also allowed Thornton to create an additional 38 jobs at the school.

Principal Menard was joined in Washington by Thornton Academy’s Director of Admissions, Mark Powers. Following the ceremony at the Department of Commerce, Menard and Powers came to Capitol Hill, where Collins and King congratulated them in person.
