WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senators Susan Collins and Angus King today congratulated The Telling Room, a writing center in Portland that helps children and young adults develop and build on their storytelling skills, on winning a National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award from the White House. The award recognizes outstanding after-school and out-of-school programs that are transforming the lives of young people. Senators Collins and King will meet representatives from The Telling Room next week while they are in Washington to receive the award at the White House.
“Arts and humanities programs foster greater student engagement and help our young people to maximize their potential,” said Senators Collins and King. “The Telling Room is doing fantastic work that helps our young people develop the skills and confidence to help them succeed – not only as great story tellers, but as active members of their communities. We’re thrilled the White House has recognized The Telling Room for its meaningful contributions to the future of Maine.”
The Telling Room will receive one of several National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Awards at the White House ceremony next Tuesday, November 17. First Lady Michelle Obama is expected to present the award, which also includes $10,000 to support the writing center.
The Telling Room focuses on young writers ages 6 to 18 and works to build their confidence and literary skills while providing real audiences for them to practice and showcase their work. The center enlists the help of local writers, artists, teachers, and community groups, and also holds writing workshops at local schools and other organizations.
