Collins, King Announce Three Maine Airports to Receive Nearly $2 Million in Grant Funding

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senators Susan Collins and Angus King announced today that the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has awarded a total of $1,947,230 in funding to three airports in Maine. The funding was awarded through the Federal Aviation Administration.

“Maine’s airports are vital parts of our transportation system that help bolster the tourism industry and support jobs across our state,” Senators Collins and King said in a joint statement. “This important investment will enhance the safety and efficiency of our transportation networks and help support local economies across Maine.”

The funding will be awarded as follows:

  • The Portland International Jetport will receive $548,123 to fund the acquisition of a replacement aircraft rescue and fire fighting vehicle to assist the airport in meeting safety requirements. It will also receive $478,084 to fund the final phase an environmental assessment study to evaluate any potential environmental impacts related to the projects identified in a 2016 Airport Master Plan update.
  • The Northern Maine Regional Airport at Presque Isle will receive $338,400 to rehabilitate runways as well as the existing apron in order maintain the structural integrity of the pavement and to provide funding for wildlife mitigation improvements to the existing storm water pond.
  • The Caribou Municipal Airport in Caribou will receive $582,623 to fund the construction of a 2,000 square foot hangar building to assist the airport to be as self-sustaining as possible by generating revenue.
