Collins, King Announce more than $3.3 Million to Lewiston for Lead-Based Paint Hazard Control & Healthy Home Assessments

Grant award will enable city and its partners to provide low and very low-income families with safer housing

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Susan Collins, the Ranking Member of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Transportation, Housing, and Urban Development, and U.S. Senator Angus King today announced that the City of Lewiston will receive from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development $2,995,159 in Lead-Based Paint Hazard Control Program grant program funding, and an additional $400,000 in healthy homes funding.  The City of Lewiston will address lead hazards in 225 housing units providing safer homes for low-income families with children.

The City will also perform healthy homes assessments in 160 units. The City of Lewiston will collaborate with Community Concepts, the City of Lewiston Economic and Community Development Department, City of Auburn Community Development Department, Healthy Androscoggin, State of Maine Public Health, and others.

“Healthy homes make for healthy families,” Senators Collins and King said in a joint statement.  “This funding will make critical safety improvements to low-income housing units throughout Lewiston to protect families, children, and other vulnerable populations.”

In June, Senator King wrote a letter in support of Lewiston’s grant application. He also signed an appropriations letter in April urging two Senate Appropriations Subcommittees, including the Subcommittee on Transportation, Housing, and Urban Development, to support robust funding for HUD’s office of Lead Hazard Control and Healthy Homes.
